“The inhabitants of the notorious and beloved EVE Universe have ten years’ worth of dramatic stories to tell,” added Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP.  “Our close collaboration with Baltasar and his creative team gives me confidence that we will capture EVE’s essence, inspiring millions of TV viewers with visions of humanity’s future.”

Table-top games get a Technology Upgrade

PlaneQuestA new games genre is emerging in which players use special conductive miniatures and two-handed gesture driven interaction to play tablet-centric games. In these games, the tablet surface becomes the game world, and users move about in them to fight and interact with digital characters in real-time.

Since the emergence of D&D and tabletop games, people everywhere have enjoyed playing with beautifully sculptured miniatures on table-tops in turn based games. A new company however, TabletTop Interactive (TTI), is aiming to give this genre a technology upgrade and modernize the gaming experience by drawing upon a host of new technologies. By taking advantage of tablets like the iPad and a new breed of large touchscreen devices, TTI is working on shifting the table-top to the “tablet-top”.

The result is a new class of games in which players use miniatures to move about and adventure in digital worlds via touchscreen gestures.

This is achieved through the use of special TabletTop Miniatures (TTMs) with conductive bases that allow each unique figurine to be recognized and tracked in the digital game world.

Players hold their character with one hand, whilst using the other hand to pan around - and hence walk or run - through large environments. Two handed control facilitates intuitive combat and interaction with digital characters that are viewed from a top-down perspective.

TabletTop Interactive has overcome a variety of obstacles and worked out some interesting features that facilitate a very natural gameplay experience. These features are demonstrated in their new game under development called PlaneQuest: Champions and include the following mechanics:

  • Each TTM has an associated TabletTop Avatar (TTA), which is the digital representation of the miniature in the gameworld. The position of the TTA is always directly under the miniature. This approach allows each miniature to cast realistic shadows - as if standing in the gameworld itself - and lets the digital inhabitants see and interact with the player’s character. This approach also prevents players from sliding their miniature through onscreen obstacles: attempting to do so, creates a disconnect between the miniature and their avatar. Players quickly learn not to try to move through walls or other obstacles because they are forced to move their miniature back to reconnect with their avatar in order to continue. In the case of small obstacles, the avatar slips around them to reconnect automatically with the player’s miniature.
  • Adding or removing miniatures from the TabletTop is catered for in the design of the game and lies at the heart of PlaneQuest game dynamics. Lifting a miniature up, or placing it down on the tablet equates to phasing in, or phasing out, of the current Plane of Existence in the game (in the game, this is called Flaring in and Flaring out, due to the burst of scintillating light produced when a person moves between dimensions). This feature lets users swap Champions in real-time to take advantage of the different strengths and special abilities of each character (though this action comes at the cost of health and power). Mastering each character is the key to successful advancement through the game.

The Kickstarter campaign behind this has gone live and is called, “PlaneQuest, where Miniatures + Tablets = TabletTop gaming!”

Episode 100 – Story Time!

Gamer's Haven 100Welcome to the first episode in the triple digits, as well as the first episode under the Nerdvana Network banner!

In this extra-special episode for our extra-special listeners, we gather our friends and some of our listeners together to tell you some of our favorite moments from the gaming table.

It was over six years ago that we set out to start this show, and now that it's many years later, and we have a loyal cadre of listeners, friends, and adventures, we want to share a bit of why we keep coming back to do this show, and why we've recorded over 72 days of actual play recordings.

If it wasn't for people like you who listen to the show and let us know about your adventures around your gaming table, whether it's in Kansas, Hawaii, Canada, Estonia, South Africa, or the Moon.

Special thanks to

Something Positive

Randy MilhollandA special thanks to Special Guest Randy Milholland, author and creator of the awesome webcomic Something Positive.  He was kind enough to share some great stories from the gaming table for us.

According to Randy, he is probably napping right now. Sometimes, at night, he dons little shoes with curled toes and a little hat and secretly aids overworked cobblers. Then he uses their stores to launder money. He also grew up in a little patch of suburban sprawl between Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas. Under a full moon he sometimes transforms into a meerkat.

New Haven Comics

Aaron WaltherAs did Aaron Walther, from New Haven Comics, writer and creator of Zero's Heroes, another pretty awesome webcomic (and one that if you, say, like our Justice City and City of Angels Actual Play, you will likely enjoy).

Aaron is the head writer and Editor of New Haven Comics. His credits include Zero’s Heroes and Science Hero. When not writing, he roams Midwest America looking for the secrets to perfect storytelling.

Welcome to the continuing adventures of the Gamer's Haven, and you're all part of it.

Thanks from all of us here at the Gamer's Haven - you listeners and friends are all why we do this show.

Oh, and support us by supporting the Nerdvana Network!

Dr. Who: Adventures in Time and Space Actual Play Part 1

Ethan sits down with Bethany, Erik, Noah, and Eunice to do a test drive of the Dr. Who: Adventures In Time and Space RPG from Cubicle 7.

This is just part one, and part two hasn't been recorded, yet.  Hopefully, the adventure will continue and conclude ... after a hiatus of course.

About Dr. Who: Adventures In Time and Space

Imagine you could go anywhere. This world or countless others, encountering strange alien races, new cultures or hostile environments. Now imagine you could travel to any time. See the pyramids and the Sphinx (back when she had a nose!), discover the secrets under Stonehenge, meet the first Emperor of Japan, or travel into the far future as humanity spreads to the stars. Where would you go?

With the Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space roleplaying game, the power is in your hands! You can go anywhere or anywhen in the universe. It’s not going to be easy. It’ll probably be dangerous. The universe is a hostile place, full of Daleks, Slitheen, Krillitane, Sontarans, Weeping Angels, Cybermen, Silence, Judoon and worse. There will be fear, heartbreak and excitement, but above all, it’ll be the trip of a lifetime.
